What have pillows proven themselves to be? There are several answers at once:

  • the convenience of use,
  • compact travel
  • practicality,
  • preventive and therapeutic properties.

Taking such a horseshoe pillow with you on a long trip, you can happily spend the whole time of the trip: from pleasant gatherings on vacation, and ending with a long journey home.

The use of such a pillow is achieved due to the anatomical shape of the model

For people of intellectual work who spend all day at their desk and in the evening do not disdain to read fiction in a homely atmosphere, an orthopedic horseshoe pillow for the neck is the only salvation from impending osteochondrosis of the cervical spine.

A collar pillow can only come in handy if you have to sleep in a sitting position

But what forms of products are sold in specialized stores.

  1. Classic rectangular (square) shape.
  2. The shape of a cushion or bone.
  3. Cervical collar (horseshoe mentioned above).
  4. In the form of a car seat belt (TravelRest manufacturer).
  5. In a form resembling the Russian letter “G” (manufacturer: “J Pillow”).

Anatomic pillows come in either a familiar rectangular shape or a special ergonomic shape.

Each variety of form is used in different situations. The cost of each individual species largely depends on the material of manufacture of the filler, which will be discussed in detail in the next section.

What filler is used for pillows?

In this case, only special materials should be used that have sufficient elasticity and the effect of “shape memory” - latex, orthopedic foam or a specific cooling gel

To ensure every need, and also adapts to the physiology of each person, manufacturers of neck pillows are available with natural fillers and synthetics.

The well-known goose down and feather has long faded into the background, thanks to the use of modern synthetic substitutes. In all basic parameters, such fillers are many times superior to Soviet pads.

Synthetic fillings include:

  • comfort
  • polystyrene foam
  • synthetic winterizer
  • holofiber
  • gel base
  • foamed polyurethane foam.

Komfortel, as well as holofiber, are used to prevent cervical spine in young children. Due to the hypoallergenicity of the aggregate and the absence of contraindications for use in newborns, this bedding has gained great popularity.

The synthetic filler comfortably erases, dries quickly, is hypoallergenic, durable, antistatic

According to similar characteristics, a synthetic winterizer is used as a filler for baby pads. It does not cause allergic reactions, and like comfort and holofiber, it tolerates washing well.

Elastic and air sintepon has a low weight of finished products and well restores shape

Expanded polystyrene is an elastic filler suitable for orthopedic appointments. A high degree of preservation of the original form allowed to maximize the therapeutic effect on humans. They make an anti-stress pillow from expanded polystyrene, which is filled with small balls, providing a massage effect for the neck.

An innovation among orthopedic accessories for the cervical spine are helium-filled pads. This material is slightly denser than water, so it is ideal for medicinal products. An additional plus is its low thermal conductivity, and as a result, in the summer you get cool. But such a placeholder will inevitably affect the price.

Innovative Ecogel as a filler for expensive pillows

Foamed polyurethane foam has a soft structure. This affects the further behavior: the product receives anatomical memory, since the return to its original form occurs at a low speed. Polyurethane foam does not absorb water and odors, so there is no need to wash it. For orthopedic purposes, such a filler is an excellent find.

Polyurethane foam is one of the most commonly used fillers for orthopedic pillows.

Often for tourist purposes there are air cushions for the neck. The top of the accessory is made of synthetics. Inside there is a cavity that is filled with air. This type is convenient to use for flights, since you are in a relatively short time in the air, and there is not so much extra space in your bag.

Natural placeholders

The executed orthopedic pillow from a natural filler is an accessory much more interesting than synthetics. This can be explained as follows: natural, natural components are diverse in their:

  • structure
  • origin
  • effective and healing properties.

But what kind of filler is used for various orthopedic pastel accessories made from natural fibers.

  1. Cotton and silk.
  2. Bamboo reed and seaweed.
  3. Horse hair and animal hair (sheep in particular).
  4. Latex base.
  5. Natural herbs.

Each placeholder has its own unique and interesting properties. This list is able to satisfy the most non-standard human whims. For example, forest herbs, previously dried, have an excellent healing effect due to the emitted extracts. A buckwheat husk copes with massage tasks. Of course, the life of such a “medicine” is limited, because you can’t wash it. But the joy of using it will be excessively high.

Of all these fillers, only latex and, to a lesser extent, bamboo fiber are suitable for an elastic orthopedic pillow.

Bamboo orthopedic pillows keep the spine in the right position, making it suitable for those who sleep on their sides

The latex base is obtained by processing plant juice. Therefore, this component is environmentally friendly and safe. In addition, due to heat treatment in the production process, the consistency is completely disinfected. The result is a hypoallergenic material that is resistant to external moisture.

Latex pillows have a wide range of shapes and sizes.

The advantages of latex, in comparison with other natural additives are:

  • simplicity of leaving (it is possible to wash in the washing machine),
  • elastic base, ideal for orthopedic purposes,
  • anatomical memory
  • durability.

The remaining aggregates (animal hair, horsehair, buckwheat, etc.) are used in some cases when it is necessary to achieve a certain therapeutic effect.

How to choose a pillow?

Pillow - the most important element of bedding

Arriving at the pastel textile store, you can not immediately buy the first model that came across. If we are talking about orthopedic accessories, be sure to consider the following parameters:

  • individual physiological characteristics,
  • distance from the shoulders to the head,

The width of the shoulder from the side of the neck to the shoulder joint is the distance that shows the height of the orthopedic sleep roll on the side

The most important indicator is the appointment. For example, a pillow-roller, or a standard orthopedic product, is ideal for everyday sleep. These two types contribute to good sleep on:

Pillow for sleeping on your side, back and stomach

But the horseshoe is only suitable for sleeping on the back, as well as for long journeys. Some models come with an extra pocket for a portable player. And the presence of straps allows you to fix the size of the accessory for each person.

The use of such a pillow is achieved due to the anatomical shape of the model

Each person has individual parameters, so the thickness of the produced pads of one model has several variations. The standard indicator is 10 centimeters. For individual orders, you can choose almost any size.

Do-it-yourself pillow

To make an orthopedic pillow with your own hands, you will need:

  • two pieces of cotton or fleece fabric (or synthetics), measuring 50 * 50 centimeters,
  • threads, needles, pins and thimble,
  • filling material (old scraps of fabrics, herbs, buckwheat, etc.),
  • scissors, cardboard or paper,
  • pencil.

Using cardboard and a pencil, you need to make patterns (stencil). After applying the form on a cardboard sheet, cuts are made with scissors. Further on these patterns pieces of fabric are cut off with a margin (allowance) for sewing.

We make a rectangular pattern and sew a zipper

After cutting the fabric, the resulting parts are folded on top of each other and sewn together. On the one hand, it is necessary to leave a non-stitched edge of 5-7 centimeters. After stitching, the cover must be turned to the front side.

Stitch the workpiece around the perimeter, turn it around and stuff it with filler

As you might have guessed, filler is inserted into the remaining unstitched gap, after which the product is completely sewn up.

What is required

To work you will need:

  • fabric for pillows
  • spool of thread
  • pattern paper
  • ruler and pen
  • needle
  • scissors
  • hair clips for attaching fabric
  • synthetic winterizer
  • iron

Cut the fabric

The photo shows how the fabric is measured and cut according to the pattern. We fold our fabric twice and mark out cuts according to the pattern, with a margin. Then we cut out the doubly folded fabric, expand it and get one full blank for the pillow under the neck.

To prevent anything from shifting during the cutting process, fasten the pattern and fabric with needles, as shown in the photo, cut with a margin. Just need to cut two pieces - for the top and bottom of the pillow.

Sew your pillow

The resulting halves must be folded with the front sides inwards, fastened with needles and sewn along the edge, leaving a small slot for filling with padding polyester.

If you have the skill of working on a sewing machine, then sewing stitches for you will be a matter of minutes. If you do not have a machine, then sew the two halves manually. This will, of course, take more time, but still, the pillow will work out sooner or later.

Please note that before turning the pillow, it is recommended to make cuts to the seam so that turning is easier.

Final stage

When the whole synthetic winterizer is full, sew the slot manually with a needle.

That's all there is to it! Your neck pillow is ready! Now, when you go on a trip, your neck will be in comfort, your sleep will be comfortable and sweet. Having made yourself one such pillow, you probably want to experiment with them. Or maybe even organize your production. Why not! Pillows can be made from soft fleece fabric, experiment with shape, thickness, etc.
